Staying cool is now literally a matter of life and death.
“A 62-year-old grandmother named Bannawag Lucas and a 53-year-old farmer named Edwin Galupan died from heat stroke as the heat index was reported to have reached 42°C in Isabela province,” reports Raymund Catindig in The Philippine Star.
The report noted: “Heat index or apparent temperature is what the temperature feels like to a human body when both air temperature and humidity are combined. Thus, even when the actual temperature is only 32°C, the human body may feel it as 42°C when humidity is considered.”
Galupan was found unconscious in his cassava farm in Barangay Casalatan in Tuguegarao City on Tue noon, May 19. That same day, Lucas was found lifeless in her house in Barangay Sinnipil in the town of Reina Mercedes.
