On Tue, Feb 3, a 16-year-old boy who was a known troublemaker shot dead a policeman before being gunned down himself at a mall in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
“At around 1pm that day, the teen went berserk after security guards of SM Sta. Rosa refused to let him into the mall because he
had a bladed weapon,” reports GMA News Online.
At least three guards had to restrain the boy as he kept waving around his bladed weapon. During the scuffle, one security guard’s
gun was dislodged from its holster and dropped to the floor. The suspect got hold of the dropped gun and then fired it. One witness, a bystander named John Mark Herradura, claimed that the boy fired in his direction. Luckily, he was not hurt.
The report noted: “At the time, police motorcycle patrolman PO1 Ariel Abordo passed by the area and was shot dead by the teen.”
Meanwhile, other cops responding to the emergency ended up shooting the teen.
Sta. Rosa police chief Superintendent Pergentino Malabed Jr. later disclosed that the teen had been a habitual offender who had been in and out of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s custody.
The teen, as the report indicated, had been linked to criminal offenses such as theft, damage to property, and alarm and scandal.
Police are investigating the possibility of security lapses in the mall.
