The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said 16 inmates escaped from their detention cell in Cubao in the early hours of Wed, Dec 31.

“QCPD District Director Sr. Supt. Joel Pagdilao revealed that he received reports at 2 a.m. that 16 inmates used a saw to bolt from the jail, and passed through Edsa Cubao on their way out,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

As such, Cubao chief of police Supt. Wilson delos Santos has been administratively relieved from his duty.

The report noted: “So far, only one of those who escaped, Robert Lacaba, has been captured in Rizal province. Lacamba was facing charges for alarm and scandal.”

According to Lacaba, he escaped because he “wanted to see his family and celebrate the New Year with them.” He explained that the other escapees fled for the same reason.

Pagdilao is asking the other inmates — who are facing charges for rape, physical injury, theft, and robbery and various city ordinance violations — to surrender.

Manhunt operations for the still-at-large suspects are ongoing.
