Our faith is amazing, but our trash is just terrible.

“On Sunday, January 18, hours after the pontiff’s final mass at the Quirino Grandstand attended by some six million Filipinos, 138 tons of garbage was collected from the route of the papal convoy to Luneta, according to the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA),” reports InterAksyon.com.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino revealed that “600 street sweepers were deployed during the five-day papal visit to ensure the cleanliness of the metropolis.”

The report noted: “Francis Martinez, head of the MMDA’s Metro Parkway Clearing Group, said the 138-ton garbage collected after the pontiff’s Mass in Luneta was equivalent to 23 truckloads of waste mostly composed of plastic food wrappers, empty mineral water bottles, and barbecue sticks.”

Martinez added that “the garbage was hauled to Pier 18 in Manila in coordination with the city government” and that “the MMDA had also used a fire truck to clean and remove the stench from the roads.”

Ironically, earlier that same day, while at the University of Sto. Tomas, Pope Francis “urged the Filipino youth to care for the environment and protect themselves from the negative effects of climate change.”
