Filipino peacekeepers flew to Haiti Tue, Jul 7, for a United Nations peacekeeping mission, the military said.

The peacekeepers, who will be replacing returning Philippine Navy peacekeepers, bid goodbye to their families and colleagues in a send-off ceremony at Villamor Airbase, led by Armed Forces of the Philippines, Vice Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General John Bonafos.

The 135 members of the Philippine Air Force peacekeeping mission were supposed to be deployed to Liberia last year but did not push through due to the Ebola outbreak. The team has a doctor, two nurses, and 13 female soldiers.

The deployed peacekeepers are expected to serve the Force Headquarters Support Unit and carry out clerical, VIP security, Civil Military coordination tasks at Port-Au-Prince, said Colonel Roberto Ancan, Commander of AFP Peacekeeping Operations Center in a statement.

“Peacekeeping operation is the AFP’s commitment to the United Nations in the advocacy for international peace and solidarity, delivery of humanitarian relief, alleviation of human suffering due to conflict, respect to rule of law, protection of human rights, women and children and participation in conflict mitigation,” Air Force said.
