12 young writers make it to J Elizalde Navarro criticism workshop

It’s easy to criticize—just look for a report on Kris Aquino and read its comments section. But to assess the values of an issue intelligently and without bias, and to express it articulately? Well, that takes practice and reason—not just guts.

To be a professional critic. That’s what 12 students will be learning at the 6th UST Varsitarian J. Elizalde Navarro National Workshop in Criticism on the Arts and Humanities, to be held in Baguio City at the end of the month. The hand-picked participants, who were asked to submit samples of their criticism, come from UP Diliman, Baguio and Los Baños, DLSU, UST, Ateneo de Manila and Naga.

The workshop is funded by UST’s official student organ, Varsitarian, and is named after the late National Artist for the Visual Arts J. Elizalde Navarro, who himself was an art critic. During his Varsitarian stint, he was the art editor and critic-poet.

This year’s fellows are Rogelio Braga (UP Diliman), Rina Garcia Chua (DLSU), Kristian Cordero (Ateneo de Naga), April Jasmin (UST), Ivan Emil Labayne (UP Baguio), J. Miguel Quizon (Ateneo de Manila University), Jix Regala (Ateneo de Manila University), Paula Pamintuan Riva (UP Baguio), Juan Carlos Santos (UST), Cheeno Marlo Sayuno (UP Los Banos), Paolo Tenchavez (UST) and Francis Luis Torres (UP Diliman).

The workshop’s panelists are Priscelina Patajo-Legasto, Oscar V. Campomanes, Rosario Cruz Lucero, Nerissa Balce, Delfin Tolentino, Rebecca T. Añonuevo, Delan Lopez Robillos, Joselito B. Zulueta, Lito Cortes, Ferdinand M. Lopez, Ralph Semino Galán and Gary Devilles.
