11 charged with illegal sugar smuggling

Eleven people were named in a smuggling complaint filed by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) in connection with ten 20-foot container vans containing sugar from Thailand.

Inquirer News reported that the  sugar smuggling attempt was worth an estimate PHP10 million pesos. Included in the complaint were Judith Escudero, President of Calorama Freight Services, Inc. the shipment consignee; Calorama Directors Democrito Rama, Carolina Rama,  Christine Rama, Fatima Qui, Emeline Archival and Shiela Cecilia Ignacio; brokers Junrey Arreglo and Tita Austria; port dispatcher Rodilin Solidarios; and warehouse owner Jesse Yu.

According to BOC head Ruffy Biazon, the complaint was also in line with the Rules and Regulations of the Sugar Regulatory Administration.
