About 1,000 families were left homeless when a massive fire broke out at a residential area in Malamawi Island here early Sunday.
The fire, which started around 10 a.m., razed about 200 houses in Barangay Diki, said fire marshal Insp. Jasmine Tanog.
Firefighters and the Philippine Coast Guard encountered difficulty in putting out the inferno because the seaside town does not have any fire truck.
With the help of residents, authorities eventually controlled the blaze around noon.
The BFP is still investigating what caused the fire, as of this posting.
