This for twenty pesos?

Police authorities on Monday rescued a 10-year-old girl from Tagum City, Davao after the girl’s own grandmother cut the the former’s right forefinger for allegedly stealing money.

According to police investigations, the grandmother on April 19 caught the child getting PHP20 (about USD.50) to buy bread. The grandmother decided to cut the child’s finger as punishment, reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

“The grandmother said she was fed up with the girl for repeatedly stealing money. She said the child has already stolen about PHP7,000. The PHP20 was not the first,” said community leader Delia Monilla on a radio interview.

Montinilla added that as far as she knows, the child is not neglected. Her mother is working in the Middle East and her father has left the family. She has two siblings also under her grandmother’s care.

Supt. Laudemer Laude, Tagum City police chief said that the child is now in the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Police authorities and DSWD are working together for the possible filing of charges against the grandmother.
