Puritans may be quick to say that these girls got pregnant because they “know too much about sex.” But maybe it’s more like the other way around. Perhaps, they didn’t know any better so they got pregnant by accident.
“Results of the 2013 Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study conducted by the University of the Philippines Population Institute and Demographic Research Development Foundation showed 2.6% of girls aged between 15 and 19 are pregnant while 13.6% have borne a child,” reports Jennifer Ambanta in Manila Standard Today.
That means, in the report’s simplified explanation, “one in 10 Filipina teenagers is a mother.”
That can’t be good. It’s also ironic that this alarming number was divulged as Women’s Month ends.
