CEBU CITY

Every January, tens of thousands of people flock to Cebu for  “Sinulog", a colorful festival honoring the origins of this culturally-rich island. Cebu was named the first capital of the Philippines in 1521. Centuries later, the quiet, idyllic province has evolved into a destination city offering day-to-night entertainment for people from all walks of life. With its numerous busy towns, crowded shopping malls, luxury hotels and crazy jeepneys, Cebu actually feels much like Manila — it is sometimes called “the Quezon City of the South.” What makes it special? It has somehow retained its small-town charm in spite of all the developments. There is something for everyone in Cebu! Its pristine white-sand beaches have made it a favorite getaway destination among travelers looking for a quick escape. Mactan island, which is just a stone’s throw away from the airport has become a popular attraction for tourists. Bantayan island is particularly loved by divers because of its rich marine life. The old Spanish Town of Carcar is known for centuries-old heritage houses, ancient churches, and historical landmarks. It is also the home of many artists, poets, and musicians. Cebu is one of the places where urban energy meets the good ole provincial life. It’s where the country’s rich cultural past seamlessly ties with the trends of tomorrow. Cebu is famous for its version of the Filipino suckling pig ‘lechon'. No need to go to a fancy restaurant — they say that the best ones are sold on the street.
