American novelist John Irving is releasing a new book in November. It’s called the Avenue of Mysteries and what do you know? It features a Mexican-American who will be traveling to the Philippines.
Mabuhay to you too, sir.
It starts with 14-year-old Juan Diego who was born and who grew up in Mexico. Fast forward to when Diego is an older man who decides to take a trip to our dear old Philippines. “What travels with him are his dreams and memories; he is most alive in his childhood and early adolescence in Mexico,” reads a portion of the book summary on the Simon and Schuster website, the publisher of the book.
Avenue of Mysteries tells the story of what happens to him in the Philippines.
Already, we are wondering if Metro Manila’s traffic situation makes an appearance in the book.
Anyway, to whet your appetite: According to Flavorwire, Irving, who is best known for The Cider House Rules, finished what he considers a short book over Christmas 2014.
But here’s an interesting back story: In a June 2013 Facebook post, Irving reveals that, Avenue of Mysteries has the slightest connection to another one of his books, A Son of the Circus. Interesting, no?
