LRT-1 now running on extended hours as part of experiment

This could be great news for late-night LRT-1 commuters.

LRT-1 is entering the second week of a month-long trial that has extended the departure of the last train by 15-30 minutes.

Since last week, the last train from Baclaran Station heading to Roosevelt has been leaving 30 minutes later, while the departure of the last train from Roosevelt Station to Baclaran has been extended by 15 minutes.

According to Light Rail Manila Corporation operations director Rod Bulario, as early as the trial’s first week, they’ve seen an increase in riders, reports CNN Philippines.

And if all goes well by the end of the experiment, he said, operating hours could permanently be extended.

The extended hours should yield an increase of 7,000 passengers, he added, in order to justify its permanent implementation.

LRT-1 is currently over-extended, taking in more passengers than it is meant to, and that’s why officials are planning to purchase 12 new trains, said Bulario.

He added that rail tracks will be replaced next week in order to increase the train’s speed to up to 60 kph.
