Lilia Cuntapay is usually seen in movies as a hauntingly scary old lady in almost every Filipino horror movie. She is regarded as the “Queen of Philippine Horror Movies,” a title she rightfully deserves.
She has become a showbiz institution that in 2011, she starred in a mockumentary entitled Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay and brought home the Best Actress award in the Cinema One Originals Digital Film Festival.
Sadly, in the video above, she’s a heartbreaking image and representation of many Filipinos who are struggling with the costs of hospitalization. She’s no longer active in showbiz because of her deteriorating health.
Now 82 years old, Cuntapay is suffering from problems with her spinal cord and needs continuous medical treatment. Something she could no longer afford.
In a video posted on Facebook by Benilda Villena, Cuntapay addressed her former colleagues and asked for their help.
“…Mga director ko, mga co-workers ko, wala na ‘ko sa showbiz. May sakit ako… Kung mahal niyo pa ako, any help will be appreciated,” Cuntapay said.
(To my directors, my co-workers, I’m no longer in showbiz. I am sick. If you still love me, any help will be appreciated.)
According to Villena, Cuntapay’s daughter and grandchild brought her to the town of Cataggaman in Cagayan Province, roughly 12 hours away from Manila by land, where she has relatives.
