During yesterday’s “National Day of Protest,” Filipino artists got together in Manila’s Luneta Park and performed a Tagalog version of Do You Hear the People Sing?, originally composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg, from the Broadway musical Les Miserables.
Opposition Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan uploaded the full version of the song on his Facebook page.
Some artists seen taking part in the performance include Sharon Cuneta (Pangilinan’s wife), Agot Isidro, and Cherry Pie Picache.
The Tagalog version is not a literal translation of the original song, commonly used in protests around the world.
But the lyrics by Vincent de Jesus seem to hit at the current administration of Rodrigo Duterte, who has been accused of human rights abuse in waging his priority “war on drugs” and has been floating the idea of declaring martial law.
The song’s lyrics go:
Ikaw ba’y makikibaka (Will you fight?)
At hindi maduduwag (And not be afraid?)
Na gisingin ang mga panatikong bingi’t bulag (And wake up the deaf and blind fanatics?)
