Traditional handwoven textiles are all the rage these days, so that’s why, on crowd funding website The Spark Project, this cute minimalist wallet from local startup brand Obrano, caught our eye.
It has all the keywords in place: local, handmade, and startup.
“Our goal is to incorporate traditional weaving in our designs,” writes Patch Dulay of Obrano in an email to Coconuts Manila.
The brand’s initial collection features traditional weaves from three provinces in northern Philippines: There’s the Kantarines weave from Abra, Binakul from Ilocos Norte, and Hablon from Ilocos Sur.
Anthill Fabric, a social enterprise working with local weavers across the country, is helping the three founders of Obrano in sourcing their textiles. “Hopefully, we get to source directly from the weavers in the future,” Dulay says.
Right now, the wallets aren’t yet available in the market as the project is still in the embryonic stage of funding. If you’re really itching for one, consider funding Obrano on The Spark Project (the project is running until Sep 25). A backer gets a wallet.
If you’re willing to wait, Obrano is looking to be ready by Christmastime. “We plan to be at bazaars by then,” Dulay says. They are thinking of selling the wallet for PHP750.
And just because we are suckers for little functional things: we love how a wallet can fit six (6) credit cards and ten (10) notes.
