Crime-thriller movie Verdict has been chosen as the country’s official entry in the International Feature Film category at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards, the Film Academy of the Philippines announced on its Facebook page yesterday.
“We are pleased to announce that the movie #VERDICT, produced by CenterStage Productions, has been chosen as the official Philippine Film Entry to the International Feature Film (formerly Foreign Language Film) Category for the 92nd Annual Academy Awards or The Oscars,” said the film organization its post published Thursday.
The next Academy Awards will be held on Feb. 9, 2020.
The movie has a long way to go before getting closer to nabbing an Oscar, however. First, the Academy Awards’ committee will choose nine films to be shortlisted, from which five films will make the final list of nominees.
The committee makes its selections from a pool of films sent in for consideration by 89 different countries from around the world. The Philippines has been sending nominees every year since the category was first introduced in 1956, but unfortunately, no Filipino movie has yet made it to the final list of nominees (yet, fingers crossed for this year, fam).
Directed by Raymund Ribay Gutierrez and top-billed by actors Max Eigenmann and Kristoffer King, Verdict follows the story of a woman who decides to file a domestic abuse charge against her abusive, alcoholic husband.
Verdict won the Special Jury Prize at the Orizzonti (Horizons Prize) section of the Venice International Film Festival that concluded in September earlier this year. The film is also set to make the rounds at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada this September, and at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea this October.
