To hire the five-member Playgirls to be at your event, you will need a budget of “around PHP50,000,” according to the group’s manager. But when the group performed at the controversial Laguna party this week, only three were able to make it — 19-year-old group leader Carla, 25-year-old Rhia, and 23-year-old Jinky.
The group’s manager, Michael Tupaz, said he received a phone call from a booker at 9am on Oct 1 requesting his talents to be in Laguna by 12pm. It was such short notice that the two other ladies that make up the Playgirls — Red and Alliyah — could not make it.
The five women comprise the 10th generation of Playgirls. The group was formed in 2009 as a four-girl ensemble inspired by the Bratz, that American line of fashion dolls. On the same year, they released the album Rated PG, under Viva Records.
“Medyo pa-tweetums pa nuon,” Tupaz told Coconuts Manila. Through the years, the group would see line-up and image changes, but despite that, the Playgirls were regularly booked at bars and clubs as well as private and corporate events. In August 2010, they even appeared on FHM Philippines.
“Ngayon, itong 10th generation, mas sexy na.” According to Tupaz, a Playgirls performance these days is an hour’s worth of pure twerking. While bookings come aplenty — tomorrow, they are booked for three events — the Playgirls also have a regular gig every Saturday at Carlito’s Grill in Montalban.
“Natatawa na nga lang kami sa mga balita, kasi that’s just a regular show. Tamed pa nga siya kung tutuosin.” And it’s true, On the Playgirls Facebook page, they’ve shared links to stories about yesterday’s party, captioning them with a sarcastic “eh di wow.”
He says the girls are used to performing in front of politicians as they’d regularly get invited to perform in provincial fiestas. When asked whether public servants would attend bar shows, Tupaz says he doesn’t know. “Hindi na kasi naming kilala yung mga attendees.”
