The Mindanao island of Siargao used to be a secret getaway for surfers and in-the-know weekend warriors but it has recently gained popularity with international tourists. So much so that last week, London-based travel club Mr. and Mrs. Smith included a Siargao resort to its list of best hotels for 2018.

Dedon Island Resort located in Malinao road, General Luna, Siargao Island won “Best Local Hotel Hero,” a category that awards establishments that are dedicated to conserving the environment and are committed to benefiting the people in its community.

“Not only is this place perfect for unwinding in paradise, they also take great care in minimizing their carbon footprint, using solar power, growing their own produce and reducing the use of plastic materials,” judge Phoebe Dahl, CEO of clothing brand Faircloth + Supply, said.

“Additionally, the owner has a foundation to support local community projects, so everything on the hotel property is crafted by locals,” she continued.

Also known as the Nay Palad Hideaway, the Dedon Island Resort is a boutique resort that offers luxury spa services, water sports activities, and cooking classes.

Dedon is the only hotel in Southeast Asia that is part of this year’s list of 12 winners. Other hotels awarded were the Roxy Hotel in New York, United States for having the “Best Date-Night Bar” and the Les Sources de Caudalie in Bordeaux, France for having the “Most Spoiling Spa.”
