Filipinos have been eagerly waiting for comic book giant Marvel’s reveal of its new Filipina character Wave ever since it was first announced last month and finally, she’s here.
Comic book writer Greg Pak revealed Wave’s look on Twitter on Saturday but fans still can’t get enough of her. Pak shared that the new superhero was designed by Filipino comic book artist Leinil Francis Yu.
“As announced at @sxsw, I’m thrilled to share the great @leinilyu’s stunning design of WAVE, Marvel’s new Filipino superhero! Gorgeous colors by @sunnygho!” Pak wrote in the tweet.

Wave has a gold and green ensemble and carries two sword-like weapons. While not much is known about her yet, she is described as “a mysterious new Filipino heroine” in Marvel’s website.
Wave will team up with heroes from China named Aero and Sword Master. The story is set in Asia and will revolve around the New Agents of Atlas led by Amadeus Cho (aka Brawn, previously the Hulk). Others who will join the team are Chinese Kung-Fu master Shang-Chi, Korean-American heroine Silk, and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Jimmy Woo.
The new series is part of the upcoming Marvel storyline War of the Realms which will have four issues. The first issue was written by Greg Pak and Gang-Hyuk Lim, with a cover by Billy Tan.
With the big reveal, Pinoy netizens lauded Marvel for adding more Filipino representation into its universe.
“#BlackPanther represented the black community. #CaptainMarvel raised the flag for women. And now I am hearing news about a new Marvel hero representing the Filipino race named #Wave,” said Twitter user @sherlocknorms. “I have so much respect for the #MCU for celebrating EQUALITY in all forms.”

This isn’t the first time a Filipino character was featured in a Marvel comic book. The Triumph Division is a superhero group based in the Philippines that debuted in Invincible Iron Man #2 in 2008.
