Fifty years is a hell of a time, especially if you’re BenCab. The National Artist is celebrating 50 golden years with a yearlong career-spanning retrospective aptly called “BenCab: 50 Creative Years.”

Organized by the BenCab Art Foundation Inc and Solaire Resort & Casino, the retrospective is a multivenue affair. BenCab Museum in Baguio, the Main Gallery of Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Lopez, Yuchengco, and Ayala Museums, UP’s Vargas, the National Museum and the Metropolitan Museum will be holding exhibits of BenCab’s works.

But highlight of the yearlong affair will be the world premiere of “Sabel: Love and Passion.” Inspired by BenCab’s long-running “Sabel” series, the musical will premiere on April 30 at the Theater At Solaire.

“Ten years in the making, the idea for a musical based on the ‘Sabel’ character was hatched by BenCab’s friend and compadre, BBC presenter Rico Hizon,” writes Eric S. Caruncho on Inquirer.net.

He adds: “Conceived as a rock musical, the project passed through various hands and underwent several changes until it reached its present form which combines poetry, dance, music, and visual arts.”

The musical stars Iza Calzado, Audie Gemora, Bo Cerrudo and the Philippine Ballet Theater. It also features libretto and direction by Freddie Santos. Louie Ocampo did the music.

April 30. 8pm. The Theater at Solaire Resot & Casino, Aseana Avenue, Parañaque, Manila. +63928 6913334.
