With the 29th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution upon us, this story is timely, as Senator Gringo Honasan was one of the most recognizable figures of that era. (Never mind if he later allegedly led some coup d’état attempts against President Cory Aquino.)
“In his recent appearance in child star Ryzza Mae Dizon’s show, Honasan was asked by Dizon about the missing ring finger on his left hand,” reports GMA News Online.
Honasan answered that he lost his finger when he was a soldier and he had been trying to escape from the enemy.
Well, Honasan simplified version of the tale doesn’t quite do it justice.
In his Funfare column in The Philippine Star, showbiz writer Ricky Lo explains the whole story. He wrote: “While escaping from his hideout in the early ‘80s after that memorable coup attempt (against then newly-elected Pres. Cory Aquino), he recalled that his wedding ring got caught in the barbwire while he was jumping over a fence and his finger was cut off. He went back to retrieve it, especially the ring. He got his finger back — and the ring — but unfortunately, the doctor couldn’t attach it back.”
Lo went on to quote Gringo, who revealed that his severed finger was later “preserved in formalin and kept at a hospital.”
