They don’t make movies like these anymore.
Mike de Leon’s poignant Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising, and his irreverent romp Kakaba Kaba Ka Ba?
Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s harrowing Karnal.
Olive Lamasan’s provocative Minsan Minahal Kita.
And that’s just for starters in “Reelive the Classics,” the film exhibition going on at the Power Planet Cinemas in Makati until Feb. 16. It’s the second in the series of week-long screenings that the ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project is holding in partnership with Power Plant. The first edition happened in August 2015.
This would just be scratching the surface, with more than 100 films restored by the ABS-CBN Film Archives,.
Some of them have been shown on international film festivals, cable and free TV, pay per view, and video on demand.
The Power Plant screenings will start from 1pm and end at midnight. Four to five film classics will be shown in a day.
These movies are of a different breed, made by masters with a vision. And while some of them made money at the box-office, the artistry and the story were the first ones that mattered.
Here’s a chance to catch these films again, even looking better than when they were first shown 20-30 years ago: Sana Maulit Muli, Ikaw ay Akin, Milan, Love Me Again, and Basta’t Kasama Kita.
If you’re lucky enough, you might find yourself seated beside one of the artists in the movie. Bibeth Orteza, Laurice Guillen and Boboy Garovillo, who were among the cast members of Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising, attended its screening, while celebrated cinematographer Pancho Escaler answered questions after the movie ended.
Reelive The Classic runs from Feb 10-16. Tickets at PHP230, PHP200, students. Go to Facebook.com/FilmRestorationABSCBN for schedule or check below.
