The Alfredo Barraza-designed national costume that Mary Jean Lastimosa wore to the 63rd Annual Miss Universe pageant got so much hate (along with the designer, of course, and Stella Araneta of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.), and it has spawned a lot of requests for a Filipino designer to be the one to design what the country’s delegate will be wearing to the pageant moving forward.
One designer, Rajo Laurel, even designed one in an instant and posted it on his Instagram account. Inspired by our fiestas, he made an Ati-atihan festival inspired design, made modern, of course.
As expected, all the comments were positive.
Now we want other designers to do the same thing.
You know what, wouldn’t it be amazing if different Filipino designers could post their “entry” and Pinoys would get to vote for their favorite? That way, the whole country gets to participate; it’s Pinoy-approved.
One can dream.
