Pinoy ’70s music icons set to take the stage in ‘Yugyugan Nation!’ concert

This is the perfect opportunity to relive the nights of disco dancing from the decade that has been touted as the “golden era of Original Pilipino Music.(OPM).”

Yugyugan Nation!, a one-night only song-and-dance fest is happening at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila on Nov 23.

Yugyugan is a unique Filipino word that can be loosely translated to “dance party”. It’s from the word, yugyog, which means means to shake or dance — a coloquial term used during the said era.

“One things is definite: What does not know any age is the love for fun. Millennial or not, that’s what we’re giving. We’re giving fun,” emphasized director Freddie Santos, who has been involved in the performing arts for more than thirty years now.

Santos explained that the project was first conceptualized during the wake of ’70’s songwriter and vocalist Snaffu Rigor, who passed away earlier this year. Snaffu’s contemporaries initially wanted to give him small tribute, but it eventualy turned into a much-anticipated on-stage reunion.

The musical retrosepect features Filipino legends Gary Arriola and Bob Guzman of Boyfriends, Sonny Parsons of Hagibis, and the 70’s SuperBand, which is a collective of singers from different groups. Iconic singer Sampaguita is also set to make an appearance.

While younger Pinoys may not recognize the singers, it’s impossible NOT to know their songs.

Some are karaoke classics like “Rock Baby Rock” and “Sumayaw, Sumunod.”

Their songs have also been revived by younger musicians like VST &Co’’s “Ikaw Lang ang Aking Mahal,” which was revived by Brownman Revival, and Wadub’s “Pag Tumatagal, Lalong Tumitibay” which was revived by Pasta Groove.

Parsons explained that he wants to take this chance to show the young generation what music from the ‘70s was like.
