The first MTV Music Evolution finally came to pass on Sunday at the Quirino Grandstand. Over 22,000 hip-hoppers came together to see, hear, and learn how this little thing called Hip-Hop came to be.

It was hosted by MTV Asia VJs Alan Wong and Hanli Hoefer, who were joined by MTV Pilipinas VJs Yassi Pressman and Chris Schneider.

Gloc-9 certainly kicked open the show in style. He included in his setlist a couple of songs from Francis M, including “Kaleidoscope World.” Abra added to this already wonderful energy, jamming with his brothers from Lyrically Deranged Poets. After which, headliner Apl De. Ap took to the stage and evelated the concert a notch higher.

Says Abra, MTV Evo is a golden opportunity for local hip-hop. “Buong mundo na ang nakikinig sa atin. Kailangan mas galingan pa natin,” he says.

Though lesser-known in the local market, DJ Cash and YG brought down the house with their killer performances — exactly what VJ Hanli mentioned a week ago, when she met with members of local press. “Even if they’re not very popular, these acts know how to perform and the energy just translates. It’s amazing.”

Hip-hop classic act from the ‘90s Naughty by Nature closed the show with a toast to hip-hop hero Tupac Shakur, and a shout of support for Manny Pacquiao.

The show was recorded and will be premiered on TV come May 30 at 7pm. In case you can’t wait for that, below are a few snaps courtesy of MTV Asia.
