Most Philippine cities are gritty, and eyesores like old telephone posts and dilapidated buildings are everywhere. But one group of artists in the northern Luzon city of Baguio prove that it does not take much to brighten up even the darkest of eyesores in town.

In the past few days, crocheted pieces have sprung up along Baguio City’s Session Road. There are crocheted flowers and mushrooms on walls and pavements and colorful scarves wrapped around light posts.

But beyond mere aesthetics, the artists responsible for the crafts have a higher purpose for decorating the streets.

“At first, we just did it for the bricks that were coming off in Malcolm [Square], that needed attention,” Dumay Solinggay, an artist part of the initiative, said.

With the recent ban of graffiti in the city, the group wants to encourage the typical street artist to elevate their art.

“Not all graffiti is an eyesore. Graffiti encourages creativity. It also challenges [those who write on walls] to elevate their art so people don’t say it’s graffiti,” she said.
