Being a beauty queen in the Philippines is a big deal because it opens a lot of opportunities in local show business. Still, many were delighted when one of the country’s top girls announced that she will be participating at the ongoing 2018 New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

Miss Philippines-Universe Catriona Gray announced on her Instagram account yesterday that she’ll be walking on NYFW’s runway on Sept. 8 for American brand Sherri Hill.

Her post shows her wearing a short sequined dress as she stands at a corner of a busy intersection.

Sherri Hill happens to be one of the sponsors of the Miss Universe pageant, which will be held in December in Bangkok. According to Rappler, Miss Universe titleholders such as Filipino beauty queen Pia Wurtzbach, Iris Mittenaere, and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters have also walked for the brand at NYFW.

NYFW started just yesterday and will last until Sept. 14.

Not surprisingly, Gray’s fans were thrilled by the announcement.

Aside from winning the Miss Philippines-Universe crown, Gray also won the Miss World Philippines in 2016.

Gray isn’t the only Filipino model whose career is on an upward trajectory. Filipino-American model Kelsey Merritt got a callback for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which means she’s being seriously considered to walk down the runway for the show.

Merritt has appeared on the brand’s promotional materials and website, so she might get a spot on the show, considered by many models as a big achievement.
