International viewers will now get another taste of Philippine action films with the release of the movie Maria on Netflix next month.
Maria director Pedring Lopez revealed on his Facebook page earlier today that the film will debut on the streaming giant globally starting May 17. Lopez also confirmed the news through a Facebook message sent to Coconuts Manila.
The award-winning director tagged lead actress Cristine Reyes on his Facebook post and said: “It’s out save the date, May 17, Cristine Reyes ‘Maria’ starts streaming on Netflix everywhere!”
Lopez also shared a Screendaily article on his post that confirms that the streaming giant has acquired the film.
Maria premiered in the Philippines on March 27. The thriller revolves around the story of Maria (Cristine Reyes), a former BlackRose cartel assassin who deliberately betrays her group by not completing a mission, leading the cartel to order that she be killed.
She then fakes her own death and creates a new life of her own, but when the cartel discovers that she’s still alive, they hunt her and her family down.

Reyes is known for drama and comedy projects on film and television, so it’s pretty dope to see her in an action film where she reportedly did 90 percent of the stunts.
The film is produced by VIVA Films, BlackOps Studios Asia and PsyOps8. It was praised for its cinematography, stunts, and the full-on action. The movie also stars Jennifer Lee, Ivan Padilla, KC Montero, and Ronnie Lazaro.
Apart from Maria, Lopez has also directed other action and horror films such as Nilalang, Binhi, and Darkroom.
