The back-to-back shows of Ateneo Art Awards winners Raffy Napay and Charles Buenconsejo are opening today at the Ateneo Art Gallery inside the Ateneo University in Katipunan.

In their new exhibits, they reference and/or make a direct shout out to their respective residencies that they’ve won at the Ateneo Art Awards.

People can expect a broad range of media — from soft sculpture to video — from both exhibits. Napay, after all is known for incorporating thread and fabric onto canvas. Buenconsejo, meanwhile, has decided to work exclusively with video, taking cues from silence.

Napay’s Sanctuary is a series of sculptures and wall-bound works that recalls his residency in England. Every object in the gallery is made by hand, shrouding the space in softness, while giving the viewer a menacing feel of getting engulfed.

For Relative Nothing, Buenconsejo deconstructs the selfie, filming his every move while in residence in Australia, thereby showing how the act of documentation can turn something into nothing.

Opening reception is tonight at 6pm.

Until Sep 12. Ateneo Art Gallery, 2/F Rizal Library Special Collections Building, Ateneo de Manila University, Katipunan, Quezon City. Free
