The time-honed art of weaving again takes center stage at the annual Habi Market, set to happen this year from Oct 14 to 16 at Glorietta Activity Center in Makati.
This year’s fair will highlight the use of Philippine cotton as the material of choice in making uber chic masterpieces that say much about the country’s cultural narrative.
Philippine cotton was considered a valuable commodity back in the olden days, but it was neither sustained nor developed.
It’s not too late! Habi is working to bring cotton back in the spotlight.
The three-day fair will showcase promising products weaved using cotton grown in Ilocos and Negros, and weaved by women from Ilocos, the Cordillera and Mindanao, mainly the Tausugs.
Laida Lim, president of Habi, said that the weavers were initially hesitant to work with cotton because they had thought that the material easily breaks, but they were happy with the results.
The weavers even praised Philippine cotton for its weight, softness and suppleness.
