Spider-Man: Two Truths and a Lie

Marvel is once again claiming Manila cinemas with the official Philippine release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Though Sony and Columbia Pictures still hold the rights on all Spider-Man films, it’s still very much a part of the Marvel cinematic universe and thus still preserves the awesomeness we all came to know and love. In fact, it was rebooted to feature Andrew Garfield in a role that was closely based on the original Spider-Man comics.

So we thought we’d go ahead and do our own reboot by upping our movie roundup game.

In this movie roundup, we are playing our very own version of Two Truths And A Lie with you guys. Here’s the deal: We’ll give you three movie tidbits and you have to guess which if these are true and which is just a rumor that may or may not be true after all!

1. The Fault In Our Stars actor Shailene Woodley was supposed to be Mary Jane Watson—until they scrapped her part.
We’ve heard from the Marvel vine that the new Spider-Man movie was cut to a bare minimum and fully rewritten, so many parts of the filming eventually didn’t make it through the movie.

Example: Mary Jane Watson, who was an essential part of the comics series and the original script. The producers, however, felt the need to streamline the movie by focusing on the Peter Parker-Gwen Stacy love affair which left Shailene Woodley, who has already confirmed her casting and have shot a few parts of the film prior to the re-write, out of the second Spidey instalment.

Woodley commented that she completely understood the said decision and thought the streamlining was a much needed lift for a film that spanned three movies with a different Spider-Man in the lead role and is attempting to regain its place in the MCU. She reportedly read the new script and was supportive of Marc Webb’s and the screenwriters’ decision.

2. Spoiler Alert! Gwen Stacy will not dieat least that’s what happens on screen.
Emma Stone’s character isn’t going to die after all so you can breathe normally now, dear Spider-Man fans. Despite the fact that Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s love interest in The Amazing Spider-Man comic series, horrendously died in an outrageous and out-of-the-blue manner at the end of series #121 titled “The Night Gwen Stacy Died,” Webb says Emma is not going anywhere out of the franchise soon.

He was quoted as saying, “There are times where we feel obligated to follow the source material, and there are times where we feel the need to deviate from it, and besides Emma Stone is a very talented actress, and we like having her around.” This was widely supported my Emma saying the main thing that attracted her to the role was Gwen’ death and how it was translated differently on film. Well it looks like everyone ends up happy on this film!

3. Just like every Marvel movie, The Amazing Spider-Man series is set to have a sequel and a spin-off.
And it’s going to be based on the other characters of the franchise including well-known Spider-Man villains Carnage and Venom. Although the new Spidey movie isn’t really a Marvel production, it apparently preserved the all-time favorite tradition of including teasers on trailers and on the different parts of the film for the studio’s next endeavors.

Don’t be surprised to find different spots in the film that would point you toward possible spin offs. Apparently, Sony and Columbia Pictures are gearing up for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 which would still be featuring Andrew Garfield.

The sequels were even announced at the last ComiCon in San Diego. Lots of Marvel geeks also noticed the teasers for possible villain spin offs like Carnage and Venom. This was solidified when a Tumblr blog called “The Daily Bugle” came out promoting the film. The said blog featured a story on comic villain Cletus Kasady, also known as Carnage.

The Venom spin off, on the other hand, had been hinted during the most recent San Diego ComiCon as well. Before you go ahead and rush to the cinemas to watch The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it’s now up to you to decide which of these facts are true and which is an absolute rumor!
