Ever used a song and dance number to introduce yourself? Kriesha Chu did, and it might make her the next big thing in K-pop.
The 17-year-old Filipino-American whose real name is Kriesha Tiu, has impressed judges of the Korean reality show “K-Pop Star 6: The Last Chance” when she sang “I Don’t Love You” by Urban Zakapa and danced to Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend.”
K-Pop Star judges, YG Entertainment’s Yang Hyun-suk, JYP Entertainment’s Park Jin-young, and Antenna Music’s You Hee-yeol all had good words for Choo.
The pretty performer also wowed the audience for fluently speaking the Korean language, which she learned at the Korean Institute. The judges looked surprised when she said that she was originally from the Philippines.
Born in Cebu, Chu eventually moved to San Francisco, California, where she was discovered by Korean agency Urban Works ENT.
“I’ve been a trainee for about a year,” Chu said. “A year ago, when I was in San Francisco, I got scouted by the company. After that, I came to Korea with my mum and little brother.”
Performers who dream of entering Korea’s wildly competitive pop industry often train under entertainment companies which are sometimes called “star factories.”
The legendary Dara herself trained with YG Entertainment company for two years prior to joining the group 2NE1.
