Jessica Sanchez reads a story for grade schoolers

Jessica Sanchez’s solo concert may still be a couple of days away, but the “American Idol” Season 11 runner-up sure is making good use of her short time here in the Philippines. Yesterday, Feb. 11, the latest brand ambassador for the youth of Smart Communications, Inc. helped spread the message of empowerment and positivity by reading a story for the second and third graders of the Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary School (EDSES) in Singalong, Manila.

EDSES is one of the beneficiary schools of Smart’s education program that aims to get the community more involved in helping the lowest-performing students in public elementary schools.

Jessica read the story “A Thirsty Sparrow” for the students. She was supposed to read it in Filipino but was afraid she’d mess it up because she’s not good in the local dialect, so she just opted to read it in English. Of course, Jessica sang, too; she did a couple of lines from “Jump In” a capella.

The students performed a song and dance number for the international star and it was nice to see Jessica join the kids in singing and dancing.

“We are very happy to have the talented Jessica Sanchez join our volunteers,” said Ramon Isberto, Smart Public Affairs Group head. “’Read to be Smart’ is one of our key CSR programs for education. Being a role model for the youth, she can help instill in the minds of young people the love for reading and the value of a good education in empowering their lives.”
