Getting free movie passes is not a right, MTRCB tells deputies

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board has the prerogative to choose its deputies, who get to watch movies for free as part of their duty, it said on Tuesday.

In a statement signed by MTRCB chairman Eugenio Villareal, the board said the appointment of MTRCB deputies is “purely discretionary” and that applicants do not have an inherent right to be issued deputy IDs.

The MTRCB said it issued the statement after receiving “irate communication” from deputies whose appointments were not renewed.

Villareal said one applicant, who claimed to be a member of the media, “went to the extent of verbally harassing one of our board members and even threatened to put the board in a bad light.”

The MTRCB said it has been screening applicants both to “give chance to others” and because of the “serious and heavy responsibilities of a deputy.”

It added citizens who really want to help ensure quality entertainment in movies can do so even without a deputy ID and the free screenings it allows.
