Being gay is not a disorder, Filipino psychologists say

The Psychological Association of the Philippines has issued a statement that its professional stand is that homosexuality is neither a disorder nor a disease.

This, after a column by Tintin Bersola-Babao on the Philippine Star that advised parents to “correct” their children if they show signs of homosexuality. The column, which quoted Dr. Camille Garcia, a psychologist, has been subject to criticism on social media.

The association’s statement, which was published on InterAksyon.com, said it “recognizes that there is no inherent illness or pathology behind same-gender sexual orientations.”

The PAP added “it has been 40 years since homosexuality was taken out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.”

It also said that the PAP Code of Ethics requires members “to recognize the unique worth and inherent dignity of all human beings; and to respect the diversity among persons and peoples.”

Babao has apologized for hurting people’s feelings. “I have profound love and respect for gays,” she said.
