Movies to make moves with: Four classic films to download for any date

Presented by

There’s nothing more frustrating than snuggling up with your loved one to watch a movie on date night, only to have your pirated DVD or illegal stream leave you jilted mid-action, right at the moment of climax. We’re talking about the film’s climax, of course…

Therefore, we invite you to do right by your Mr. or Ms. Right and change the way you watch movies with Smart Big Bytes 15. The special offer allows users – who are not required to undertake contracts, sign ups or logins – to download two full-length movies from iflix for just P15 on their Smart Prepaid. After all, nothing says “I love you” like super affordable copyright-free entertainment!

Scared of picking a movie your date will hate? Fear not – we bring you four classic films they won’t fail to fall on any movie date night!

Chocolat

Chocolat

There are two things almost every woman loves: Chocolate and Johny Depp. A film containing both in abundance will therefore keep the lady in your life… well and truly in your life. Chocolat, a British-American romantic comedy-drama – based on a novel of the same name by Joanne Harris – was nominated for five Academy Awards, eight BAFTAs and four Golden Globes after its release in 2000.

The film tells the story of Vianne, a young mother (played by Juliette Binoche), who sets up shop in a repressed fictional French village, touting her somewhat magically seductive chocolates during Lent. The pious mayor condemns Vianne’s crusade to bring more fun and color to local lives, but she soon finds a likeminded accomplice in the form of Traveller Roux, an alluring boat gipsy played by – you guess it – Johnny Depp.

Top Gun

Top Gun

Beloved by all since its release in 1986, Top Gun – an action-drama directed by Tony Scott – has something for everyone; romance for the girls, action for the boys, not to mention a nice dollop of homo-eroticism that has become synonymous with this legendary film.

Enjoy Tom Cruise at his best (before all the Scientology and sofa jumping nonsense), as he bulldozes his way through the “Top Gun” fighter pilot academy as Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Maverick learns some valuable lessons about teamwork and showmanship as he navigates the thrills and spills of the program and attempts to win the affections of a certain Charlie Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis.

Crazy Stupid Love

crazy stupid love

Released in 2011, Crazy Stupid Love is the most modern classic on our list, but a classic all the same. Starring everyone’s favourites – including Steve Carell, Ryan Goslings, Julianne Moore and Kevin Bacon – this American rom-com is a whirlwind of face-palming slip-ups and coincidences that amuse all in their wake.

The movie sees Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) embark on a crash-course in bedding women led by lothario Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), after the former discovers his wife cheated on him with a co-worker. Hilarity and drama ensue, however, as Jacob begins to fall in love with a young lady named Hannah (Emma Stone) just as Cal gets to grips with being a player. If you and your partner like a good twist, this is the one for you!

Forrest Gump

Classic films don’t get much more classic than Forrest Gump, the epic 1994 romantic-comedy drama based on a novel of the same name by Winston Groom. Starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson and Sally Field, the movie won a flurry of awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the 1995 Oscars.

If you really don’t know (you really should!), the film depicts the life of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a rather simple and naive soul from Alabama who turns out to be surprisingly talented, industrious and downright lucky. Forrest’s story frequently collides with that of Jenny, a girl he’s clearly been in love with since they met on the first day of school. You can never watch this heartwarming film too many times.
