‘Maximo Oliveros’ in 10 great gay films from East and Southeast Asia list

One of the country’s very few commercially and critically successful independent productions, Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros, has made it to a British Film Institute list of top 10 gay movies from East and Southeast Asia

BFI describes the 2005 production as a “funny but gritty coming-of-age film.”

It stars Nathan Lopez, who plays the young boy Maximo whose infatuation with a police officer is put to a test when it comes between the 12-year-old’s loyalty to his family.

The BFI list also includes the following movies:

  • Japan: Funeral Parade of Roses (1969)
  • Japan: Gohatto (1999)
  • Japan: Tokyo Godfathers (2003)
  • China: Farewell My Concubine (1993)
  • China: East Palace, West Palace (1996)
  • HK: Happy Together (1997)
  • HK: Soundless Wind Chime (2009)
  • Thailand: Tropical Malady (2004)
  • Malaysia: I Don’t Want To Sleep Alone (2006)

The BFI roundup coincides with a screening of Happy Together in London this month.

It is also a way for BFI to promote its new online video player (for £2.50), part of the Institute’s five-year Film Forever development plan to “help drive the growth of the film industry with a particular emphasis outside London,” according to a BBC report.

There’s a cheaper way to see the movie. The new website TaraNoodTayo.TV  is also renting out Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros at $US1 for 24 hours.
