The Philippine Educational Theater Association may have just received the best review of its new play, Three Stars and a Sun.
Using Francis M’s songs, the rap musical tells a story about two groups inside the Stormdome, a fallout shelter that protects what’s left of “Pinasland” from global warfare, shit weather, and everything else the future may bring — yup the play is set 70 years into the future.
The theater company had a preview on Wednesday and among the invitees were Francis M’s family. His daughter, Maxene Magalona quickly posted a “review” on her Instagram account, raving about the play.
“All through the show, I was just blown away. I never thought that my dad’s songs could be used in a play to tell a story but amazingly, PETA was able to do it so creatively. So thank you, PETA. Thank you for using Francis M’s songs to help tell a story of national importance,” a portion of her caption reads.
About 20 Francis M hits are used in the play, including “Mga Praning,” and “Mga Kababayan.”“The songs of Francis M. will be all over the place,” Director Nor Domingo tells the Philippine Daily Inquirer. “Some songs will have slight adjustments in the lyrics just so they fit, but the spirit of the material will still be there; and there are songs that we use with the original lyrics but in a different context.”
The cast includes Che Ramos-Cosio and Carla Guevara-Laforteza, Bodjie Pascua and Raffy Tejada, Giannina Ocampo and Justine Peña, among others.
Three Stars and a Sun will run from Feb 4 to Mar 6 at the Peta Theater in Quezon City. Ticketworld. Tickets start at PHP800. Call +63 2 7256244.
