Martin Nievera has narrowly escaped a social media scandal that he himself started last weekend when he asked on Twitter a question that more sober minds have been asking for the longest time — “What has happened to the noon time shows on Sunday?”
The famously tactless singer was referring to recent changes that ABS-CBN made in ASAP as a reaction to competitor GMA 7’s new show, Sunday Pinasaya.
Unlike ABS-CBN’s long-running Sunday noontime variety show, Sunday Pinasaya does not rely so much on song-and-dance numbers. Instead, it’s got beefed-up live hosting portions and comedy skits.
Because of that, ASAP has also added segments like “Pa Nae Nae Boys vs Pabebe Girls Showdown”.
We could only assume that such a development poses a threat to people like Nievera whose only real talent is singing (if at all). We mean, no one wants to lose a well-paying job, right?
As soon he realized he may opened a can of worms, Nievera came to his own rescue.
He quickly clarified his position by explaining that ASAP 20’s greatest competition is actually ASAP 19, and the show is welcome to try all formats because artists know it’s a “reinvent or die” business.
We try to satisfy many markets with dignity and class. Everyone we should welcome & try all formats. Change is good. We can shift back&forth

After 20 years asap can be all it can and give more. We reinvent or we die. So relax all everything Uwant in asap is still there- plus more!

He also defended what followers referred to as “game show portion”, saying there’s a market for that type of performance.
@humdinger_mayo I don’t think so cause that concept of comedy skits is older than me. There is a market for that too

Martin also assured fans the old format of ASAP is still there, but is getting some extra boost from additional segments.
@wifenicap16 old format is still there just trying to add and subtract when we feel like it.

Nice save, Martin! Though the singer knows he could get in trouble for letting his followers know what he thinks of the program.
@lhenlontoc I will do my best. I am sure I am in trouble now tweeting to u all but I love asap more than anyone so I want only the best

At the end of the day, he says, he takes great pride in being a Kapamilya and that there is always room for improvement and competition.
Do not misinterpret my reactions to all the comments re asap. I take great pride in being kapamilya. Asap20’s greatest competition is asap19
