Filipino fans, please be careful with what you post online because Maine Mendoza is not amused.
The actress yesterday told a fan to respect Ria Atayde, the sister of Mendoza’s rumored boyfriend Arjo Atayde, after the fan accused Ria of using Mendoza to get ahead in her showbiz career.
The exchange of tweets started when a netizen using the handle @mcbill0524 tagged Ria in a post and wrote: “You’re using @mainedcm (Mendoza) again. You and your brother are such users, no? You became famous and you even got projects for using Maine’s name. Users.”
The poster also added a screenshot of a note which said: “[D]on’t drag her (Mendoza) name on topics that have nothing to do with her. Have some respect! Thank you for understanding.”
It’s unclear what prompted the netizen to attack Ria. However, Mendoza didn’t ignore her fan’s harsh words. She told him to have “some respect” for Ria and to “stop this nonsense.”
She added: “They get projects because of their talent, not because of any other reasons. Once and for all let’s give credit to whom its due.”
Instead of stopping, however, the fan shot back at Mendoza. He said that Mendoza has to understand where some of her fans are coming from. He also said, somewhat stubbornly: “Is it now nonsense to care for you and Alden? If we are wrong in shipping you two – tell us so point blank.”
The “Alden” whom the fan was referring to was Mendoza’s loveteam partner, Alden Richards. Their partnership unraveled after she posted a lengthy letter on her social media account in November 2017 where she admitted that she and Richards are just friends, contrary to her fans’ belief that they were a real couple.
Despite that statement, however, some fans are still hoping that she and Richards will end up together in real life. This remains despite the existence of persistent rumors that she’s dating Arjo. However in an interview with ABS-CBN, Mendoza said she and Arjo are friends.
Mendoza’s difficult relationship with her fans isn’t new. In the Philippines, some fans expect to have a say in their idol’s personal lives, and they would openly oppose them if the star does something that the fans don’t agree with.
Mendoza tried to reason further with her emotional fan. She told him that it’s “never right to hate on people.” She added: “That (hate) is too heavy on one’s hearts, let’s not be consumed by it. Good night!”
Some fans agreed with Mendoza’s message, such as @ashdect who wrote: “I understand how we wish A&M (Alden and Maine) to end up together. But if we are being disrespectful by expressing what we want, I think it is not right. We are deeply concerned with those who hurt us but we ourselves are hurting other people.”
However, some fans criticized Mendoza, such as @ikaw_ako. She accused Mendoza of siding with the Atayde siblings whom she said have done things that have disappointed members of AlDub Nation (ADN), the fans of Richard and Mendoza’s currently inactive love team.
She wrote: “You have changed Maine. It’s not right that you defend those people who are the reasons for making ADN feel disappointed. We don’t want to blame you but you are siding with people (Ataydes) who are the reasons why you are being bashed by other people. [You are not supporting ADN] who are always defending you.”
Fan @Geena23697356 just wants to know what the real deal is between Mendoza and Arjo.
She wrote: “Why don’t you clear once and for all your [relationship] status with Arjo? So many people have been hurt! At least for once, you should react on this issue! It’s always ADN that’s wrong! You are being used by them (Ataydes)! Ny (sic) making you a bad person! Don’t hurt us! Just be honest about Arjo!”
