Well, that’s definitely a statement.

The seventh edition of ManilArt, the Philippine international art fair, opened today with the unveiling of an interactive art installation that makes light but critical treatment of the controversial Torre de Manila.

The private development by DMCI, rising at 49 stories, has been criticized for destroying the view of the famous Rizal Monument, a national shrine.

Torre de Manila has divided the Philippines, with a petition filed before the Supreme Court seeking the building’s demolition.

The installation by sculptor and theater designer Bonifacio Juan featured a 10-foot wall representing the Manila skyline and the Rizal Monument without Jose Rizal.

The Philippine national hero is shown below photo-bombing, inserting himself to the shots of parkgoers.

Art fair goers are meanwhile encouraged by ManilArt organizers to act as the parkgoers, in effect having their shots photo-bombed by Rizal himself.

The interactive art installation is expected to become the biggest attraction of the seventh edition of ManilArt.

Some 30 major Philippine and foreign art galleries are taking part in the art fair, which which runs till Oct. 11 at the SMX Convention Center of SM Aura Premier, Taguig City.
