Lea Salonga is returning to Broadway through Allegiance, a musical based on Star Trek actor George Takei’s childhood.
It will first be previewed on Oct. 6, 2015, at the London Theatre in Broadway, New York City, and have a grand opening on Nov. 8.
Salonga emphasized that she is doing this project not for her career — though she already played this role in a San Diego production in 2012.
Referring to her daughter, Salonga explains that “she’s being raised in the Philippines and she identifies as Filipino and as American but she also needs to know that you know what, Mommy is going to be doing a show where your ancestors’ history plays a huge part, so this is a much more personal thing than it is anything for my career.”
Salonga’s husband, Robert Charles Chien, is Chinese-Japanese.
