Jasmine Curtis-Smith is proving herself to be a formidable actress!
The young star won the Best Actress award for her role in the movie Baka Bukas at the 2016 Cinema One Originals Film Festival, which held its awards night on Sun, Nov 20.
Jasmine bested Shaina Magdayao, Natalie Hart, and Peewee O’Hara, among others for the trophy. In Baka Bukas, she plays a lesbian who is in love with best friend, played GMA actress Louise delos Reyes.
The 22-year-old actress turned emotional when she accepted the award, revealed she had to convince her management to allow her to do the movie.
“Mabuhay ang LGBT community! We have a voice. I am with you guys whether I am LGBT or not. I stand with you guys and I will be with you all the way,” she said.
Jasmine has starred in a number of mainstream movies (including the Alden Richard and Maine Mendoza-starrer Imagine You and Me). But she has mainly made a name for heself as an actress via independent films. She won the Best Supporting Actress award for her work in Transit at the 2013 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival.
Other winners include showbiz newcomer Jameson Blake (Best Supporting Actor for 2 Cool 2 Be Forgotten), Rocky Salumbides (Best Actor for Lily), and Natileigh Sitoy (Best Actress for Lily).
