A great period film immerses its audience in a time and place unknown to them. The impact would be even greater if they’re screened in an equally historic venue.

The Intramuros Administration announced on its Facebook page on Monday that it will once again hold the Intramuros Open Cinema in April.

The outdoor film screening is for free and will happen April 6 and 7 at the Puerto Real Gardens in Manila’s historic walled city Intramuros, which was established during the Spanish occupation.

The two movies that will be screened this year are the Cinemalaya film festival documentary Honor: The Legacy of Jose Abad Santos (April 6) and the award-winning musical drama Ang Larawan (April 7).

Both of the screenings will start at 6pm.

2018’s Honor: The Legacy of Jose Abad Santos is a documentary about the late Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos who was part of the guerilla forces during World War II.

The film weaves together interviews with Santos’ kin and top World War II Philippine historians, official documents, re-enactments, and excerpts from articles written by Santos’ son, Pepito, who was present during his father’s last days.

The 2017 musical film Ang Larawan, on the other hand, tells the tale of two sisters undergoing financial problems who agonize over whether or not they should sell a painting which was their father’s final masterpiece. The film is set in 1941, just before World War II.

Interested moviegoers can check out the Facebook event pages of Honor: The Legacy of Jose Abad Santos and Ang Larawan to book tickets. They are advised to arrive at least 30 minutes before a film starts and to bring their own mats, blankets, foldable chairs, or inflatable sofas.
