Honor thy Lloydie: Our favorite actor won an acting award in NY

Actor John Lloyd Cruz’s decision to shave his head and heartthrob image in 2015’s box-office indie hit Honor Thy Father may just be the best decision he has made.

It’s won him his first acting award abroad, in New York no less.

In the film, Lloydie, who’s been in the biz for 17 years now (he began as Rovic in the TV show Tabing Ilog), plays Edgar, a man who turns to criminality to save his family after they lose everything because of his father-in-law’s get rich quick scam.

At the 15th New York Asian Film Festival, held from Jun 22 to Jul 5 in the Big Apple, he proudly took home the Star Asia Award, which is given to an actor who’s contributed to the development of Asian movies.

He is the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to receive the award.

“As an actor, you continue to evolve,” John Lloyd told Dennis Clemente on NBC News. “You don’t want to limit yourself.”

We hear his next project, a Lav Diaz movie where he co-stars with Charo Santos-Concio, is so transformative and different from other roles he’s played before, that award-giving bodies will surely be knocking on his door, too.
