Planning to visit the island of Boracay soon? You can soon travel without presenting a negative RT-PCR result if you are fully vaccinated.

In a recent press conference, Aklan governor Florencio Miraflores committed to waiving the need for negative RT-PCR results for fully vaccinated tourists once the island’s vaccination rate reaches 100 percent.

Governor Miraflores said that the move is meant to revive Boracay’s tourism industry.

Boracay currently receives an average of 700 tourists a day, significantly lower compared to its daily tourist arrivals of 6,000 pre-pandemic, the governor said.

With the lifting of Aklan’s modified expanded enhanced quarantine (MECQ) in September, Boracay’s tourist arrivals grew to 6,702 in September and 17,995 in October.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) currently projects the island’s vaccination rate at 62.78 percent among the eligible population, with 91 percent of tourism workers fully jabbed. According to tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, she is confident that the island will reach full inoculation by the end of the month.

No new active cases on the island have been recorded since October 18.
