What do National Artists Lamberto Avellana, Manuel Conde, Severino Montano, and Nestor Vicente Madali (NVM) Gonzalez have in common?
All of them observed their birth centennial in 2015. And in 2016, they are the center of the celebration of UP’s annual arts and culture month in February.
Dramatic productions, puppet shows, film showings, dance concerts and lectures — either made by these artists or about them — will be staged in various venues throughout the university.
Entitled Panahon ng Luwalhati, the month-long celebration is meant to help the modern Pinoy realize the glory of his culture.
After all, that was what all four National Artists had fought for in their time: Gonzalez in literature, Montano in the theatre, Conde in film, and Avellano in both theatre and film.
In experiencing Panahon, it would be interesting to see the gains of that legacy, and what might still need to be done.
