In a few days, Deftones returns to our shores for another night of an unforgettable pure dose of hardcore music as they stage their revisit on May 26, 2013 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
This will be the second time the band will be in the country. The first one was in 2010 during their very successful Diamond Eyes Album Tour. Fans were treated to an awesome gig and a night of watching their rock heroes doing what they’re great at – rockin’ their hearts out. The event was such a success that it was still pretty much talked about around the Internet and social media for weeks after.
This time, Deftones returns to promote their newest album off the rack: Koi No Yokan, featuring cuts Swerve and Tempest City which you have probably heard by now. So with Chino Moreno and the rest of the Deftones crew just days before their anticipated return, we give you five things to expect with the much-awaited Koi No Yokan tour:
This is bound to be one emotional night
Not the kind of emo where the vocalist will scream about how much his ex-girlfriend broke his heart when he was sixteen, not that brand of emo – though expect Chino to still scream the words on some of their songs (with no ex-girlfriend relativity), it’s meant to be sang (or growled?) like that after all.
It’s bound to be emotional because Deftones original and long-time bassist, Chi Cheng, just passed away in April. Chi was involved in a tragic car accident in 2008 that left him comatose since then. He suddenly died of a possible heart attack on April 13. So, better expect a moment at the concert when the band requests for a moment of silence to honor their friend and original man on bass, Chi Cheng.

Some band not named Deftones will get booed
Just weeks ago, Splintr.com, staged an online promo on who will join local rock heroes Queso to do the front act for the California-based rock artists.
Six bands were nominated, namely: Philia, Franco, Faspitch, Pitik, Salamin, and Earthmover. The artist with the most likes on the promo page would get to be the front act.
As a result, the band Philia won. Now, here’s the problem, people who’ll be likely be the ones attending the concert (read: ticket holders) don’t want them there – especially on stage as the front act.

Philia, apparently | Photo: Philia Facebook page
You see, the band Philia, which most people say sounds a lot like American rock act Flyleaf, are headlined by female celebrity Arci Muñoz and fellow actor Dion Ignacio. Having these celebrities on board surely affects the popularity of the band, and because it was essentially a popularity contest, Philia had a huge advantage over the five other artists.
While a lot of you may think people will be happy seeing the pretty Arci Muñoz bringing her rock princess attitude on stage, that’s when you’re dead wrong.
Around the Internet, and especially on social media, people who’ll be most likely attending the event say they want another band to share the same stage with Chino and the gang. They want the three-piece instrumentalists Earthmover to open the show.
Earthmover finished second in the voting. Posts like this, and this emerged citing fans’ dismay with the results, especially when even Deftones.com is on their side. So, good luck, Philia!
By the way, here are some clips to help you appreciate the situation.
This is Philia:

And this is Earthmover:

It’s going to get down louder and harder
In contrast with their Diamond Eyes album, which harbor cuts like Sextape and Beauty School that give-off a softer resonating ambient feel, Koi No Yokan is pure melodical angst. This is the Koi No Yokan Album Tour, so expect it to get down on a harder scale compared to the Diamond Eyes album tour. And if you’re really eager to know which songs they will be playing, it’ll be close to this set list.
- Diamond Eyes
- Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)
- My Own Summer (Shove It)
- Lhabia
- Rocket Skates
- Rosemary
- You’ve Seen the Butcher
- Feiticeira
- Poltergeist
- Digital Bath
- Tempest
- Swerve City
- Headup
- Rivière
- Change (In the House of Flies)
- Engine No. 9
- Bloody Cape
Encore:
Root
7 Words
During the Diamond Eyes tour, the band played Back To School in lieu of Root. It’s easily considered one of the favorite cuts among their songs so it won’t be a surprise if the guys will give in and play it again when the crowd starts screaming for an encore.
This is bound to be Epic (Yet, again)
Self-explanatory. When you have one of the biggest rock acts of the generation playing in front of you, in your country, with a new album, there’s nothing you can ask for more – well, except for a backstage pass, maybe.
Everyone will be looking for the after party
During their last stay, when the concert was done and dealt with and fans that got a rock show of their lives were looking for a place to chug a bottle or two while chatting their Deftones experience are all set and ready to settle – when they suddenly got news, Chino Moreno of Deftones was partying at Encore! (R.I.P.)

Chino also made dancing to Katy Perry’s very macho in this clip.
And in no time at all, people who rarely go clubbing were dying to be in queue to get in the club and have a chance to hang out with Chino.
Not even Paolo Valenciano of Salamin, a self-confessed non-party person could say no when someone messaged him where Chino was. Hence, the video above. Fans are hopefully wishing the same thing will happen again. So, Chino? Where’s the after party at?
