First-ever Pinay version of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ unveiled in PH-exclusive cover

Fans of comic books, ass-kicking women (and nostalgic crossovers) rejoice.

For the first time ever, a Filipina vampire slayer is gracing the cover of comic book series Buffy the Vampire Slayer set for release in the Philippines in June, and the upcoming cover was unveiled by local comic book store Filbar’s yesterday.

Buffy: Every Generation #1, is a “special, limited run variant” made in partnership with U.S.-based Boom Studios, Filbar’s said in their Facebook post. Boom Studios is responsible for reimagining the popular ’90s Joss Whedon franchise of the same name which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar (do we even need to tell you that?) into a comic series since January last year.

The Philippine edition cover is made by Trese co-creator Kajo Baldisimo, and the book will include a 10-page story introducing the “first full appearance of a Filipina vampire slayer into the universe of the hit series.”

Wielding a wooden stake in one hand (as vampire slayers do), and what appears to be a bolo (a heavy, single-edged knife of Philippine origin) in the other, the as-yet unnamed vampire slayer is also seen donning a traditional Filipino garb.

Baldisimo told ABS-CBN in an interview that Buffy is not much different from Alexandra Trese, the protagonist detective who investigates the supernatural in graphic novel Trese, which the artist co-created with writer Budjette Tan.

“Buffy is a badass who dedicated her life fighting supernatural evil. I like that trope,” Baldisimo said, adding that “like Trese, the protagonist is also a cool Filipina who’s wielding something pointy and charging towards unseen monstrosities.”

The Makati born-and-bred artist said that Filipinos’ love for monsters is all too familiar, and this crossover will likely sate supernatural cravings.

“We love our monster myths… I imagine, a vampire slayer based in the Philippines will elicit a pleasant and familiar reaction from Pinoy readers,” Baldisimo added.
